This $99-million, 185,000 square-foot addition to Raleigh’s Wake Medical Campus houses the first children’s hospital in Wake County and connects to the existing hospital in nine places, housing a new main entrance and two-story entry lobby, an expanded pediatric intensive care unit, acute care beds, and two-floors of shell space for future growth. The project also includes a $17-million, 1,200-space, precast concrete superstructure parking deck built on bearing cast-in-place retaining walls and supported on driven piles. An artful pedestrian bridge connects the two over the healthcare campus roadway infrastructure. This project received a 2011 American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) NC Honors Award.
