Wake Technical Community College, Northeast Campus
Raleigh, NC
Having experienced tremendous growth since it opened its doors 45 years ago, Wake Technical Community College desperately needs more room. Currently, more than 11,450 students are enrolled in its curriculum programs, representing a 6-percent increase over last year as well as the largest enrollment in the school’s history.
Mulkey teamed with architecture firm Pearce Brinkley Cease & Lee and other firms to complete Phase 1B of a campus master plan for Wake Tech, whose mission is to meet the lifelong educational training and service needs of its community.
With an eye out for Wake Tech’s future growth needs, the overall plan involves 18 buildings – totaling 1.2 million square feet of space – and 4,500 parking spaces. The buildings, walkways, landscaping, roads, drives, parking lots and parking decks were all designed to project an overall “campus-like” setting with a sense of place. The plan also calls for enhanced existing wetland and Neuse River buffers to create beautiful vistas from the terraces of the buildings.
Phase 1B of the project consists of extending a four-lane main road, constructing two interior service roads to provide for better traffic circulation, and parking for 350 to 400 cars. Other projects within the scope of Phase IB include construction of a new 79,000 square foot building and the expansion of an on-site facility plant.
Wake Tech is a sustainable campus, which means all construction will be designed to achieve a LEED Certification from the United States Green Building Council.
