USA Baseball Complex, Thomas Brooks Park
Cary, NC

Mulkey was the primary site/civil firm working on this project, which included three signature baseball fields and the headquarters of USA Baseball.

During the master planning stage, Mulkey was responsible for preliminary site investigations, irrigation feasibility studies, preliminary utility designs and cost estimating. Mulkey also prepared a topographic survey of the site, and conducted subsurface non-gravity utility location and mapping, tree identification and survey, and wetland identification and delineation surveys.

During the design development and construction document phase, Mulkey executed all necessary grading, roadway improvements, storm drainage, stormwater quality and quantity controls, sanitary sewers and potable water extensions, baseball field drainage, erosion control plans, specifications and cost estimates. The firm also obtained all necessary permits for the project.

During the construction administration and observation phase, Mulkey managed construction of the utilities, road improvements, site grading and storm drainage installation.

Some of the project's challenges included a strict permitting and approval process in Cary as well as dealing with multiple clients — all of which required extensive proactive coordination and communication on Mulkey's part.

Mulkey also worked around a historic cemetery and a substantial amount of wetlands and stream buffers, which created an odd-shaped piece of property. Mulkey collaborated with the N.C. Department of Transportation to ensure that a preliminary design allowed for adequate buffers near the proposed I-540 Outer Loop. Finally, the site was heavily wooded with steep slopes, creating topographical challenges.

Construction started in July 2005 and was completed in June 2007. Mulkey met all deadlines and schedules for this project.
