Statesville Road Widening/Cindy Lane Extension

This project for the City of Charlotte initially involved widening Statesville Road from two to four lanes with a divided landscaped median, sidewalk and bicycle lanes. Cindy Lane Extension, which intersects Statesville Road, was later included to help the city execute its 2025 Transportation Plan. 

As part of the effort, Mulkey provided the city with planning, roadway design, hydraulic design, environmental studies, surveying, public involvement assistance and utility coordination.

As with many successful projects, public opinion and support were critical. Mulkey played a lead role in public hearings, providing citizens with information and maps that helped them understand project issues and the intended results. In addition, Mulkey worked diligently to maintain the visual appearance of the community. The firm worked closely with the City of Charlotte's arborist to preserve many of the existing 150 hardwood trees that aligned the road. The resulting collaborative design met transportation as well as aesthetic and environmental needs.
