Reedy Creek Greenway
Raleigh, NC

Since it opened in 2005, the Reedy Creek Greenway pedestrian bridge has received national acclaim for its physical grace and beauty. And Mulkey's extensive preliminary study was critical to its success.

Mulkey was selected by the N.C. Department of Transportation to study the feasibility of building an off-road bicycle and pedestrian greenway in Raleigh between Meredith College and the N.C. Museum of Art.

A major concern was the need to bridge the Raleigh Beltline (I-440), which separates the college and museum properties. Given its prominent visibility over a highly traveled freeway, its long length (500 feet) and its proximity to the museum, the bridge would require special aesthetic treatment.

Mulkey submitted its final report on time and within budget to the N.C. Department of Transportation in May 2001. Besides providing a final recommendation, the report offered a detailed and comprehensive analysis of description, purpose and need; existing conditions; project cost; discussion of the I-440 bridge; discussion of alternatives on the art museum and college campuses; highway right-of-way encroachments; zoning issues; and environmental concerns and screening.
