SC 38/US 501 • Dillon and Marion Counties

A busy tourist (and hurricane evacuation) route between I-95 and the Myrtle Beach/Grand Strand area is easier–and safer–to travel, thanks to the completion of this wide-ranging project.

Mulkey engineered 2.1 miles of new location for SC 38, and widened 3.2 miles of US 501, culminating in a well-designed interchange that not only reduces congestion and safety concerns, but also provides a prime location for future industrial and commercial development in the area.

Among the challenges encountered were the presence of a school, an historical site and a cemetery, all of which could not be disturbed.

Mulkey services on the project included: project management, roadway design, hydraulic design, structure design for a curved two-lane flyover bridge, multiple culvert extensions, traffic control, signing, utility coordination, capacity analysis and safety improvement recommendations.
