I-77/Tyvola Road Interchange
Charlotte, NC
The busy I-77/Tyvola Road interchange
serves as a primary access road to the Charlotte Coliseum and the Charlotte
Douglas International Airport. The section is also vital in carrying interstate
traffic through Charlotte.
Mulkey faced some daunting challenges in designing the interchange. First, the
firm had to accommodate the estimated 100,000 vehicles that would traverse the
area daily during construction. Second, tight right-of-way constraints had to
be reconciled. And finally, the firm had to meet an aggressive schedule. The
firm completed its preliminary plans 70 days ahead of schedule and final plans
on the clients required date. Traffic control and construction staging
methods enabled traffic to flow efficiently during construction. And final construction
estimates showed that the project was completed within 0.3 percent of the initial
bid, reflecting the accuracy of Mulkeys plans.
Mulkey received the 2000 Honors Award for Engineering Excellence in Transportation
from the Consulting Engineers Council of North Carolina for its design of the
interchange.
