Biomanufacturing Training & Education Center
NCSU Centennial Campus, Raleigh, NC

Mulkey worked with O'Brien/Atkins on the design for N.C. State University's new Biomanufacturing Training and Education center (BTEC) to be constructed on its Centennial Campus. This 93,800 square-foot hands-on facility for education, basic training and skills development in biotechnology industry operations is the largest of its kind in the country.

With a boom predicted for the biopharmaceutical sector, N.C. State is hoping to address the anticipated workforce needs with the BTEC. It will have the capacity to train as many as 3,000 students and prospective employees annually.

Mulkey designed the potable water and sanitary sewer extensions and connections to the building, on-site storm water treatment and storage, and the soil and erosion control measures for the site and the contractor lay-down area. Mulkey was also responsible for obtaining all permits associated with the development of the site.

The BTEC will simulate a plant capable of producing biopharmaceutical products and packaging them in a sterile environment. It will include support training and education classrooms, laboratories, building and process utilities. The facility will be outfitted so students get experience using the same large-scale equipment they would use on the job.

University officials expect that the center will become a major force for statewide economic development and job creation in the biomanufacturing, pharmaceutical and related agricultural industries.
