Fayetteville Street Renaissance
Raleigh, NC
It's one of the most eagerly anticipated and talked about civic projects in years. Bringing back Raleigh's historic Fayetteville Street as a thriving business, retail and community thoroughfare after it had spent decades as a 1970s-era pedestrian mall.
Working with its other partners, Cooper Carry, Martin/Alexiou/ Bryson, and Reynolds & Jewell, the Mulkey team designed a space that will bring life back to Fayetteville Street. Parades and festivals, retail stores and restaurants, and a clear view to the Capitol Building were some of the many goals established through the collaboration process held with the public and downtown stakeholders.
Mulkey served as the prime consultant on this project and was responsible for its overall success. The firm managed all engineering and visualization responsibilities. Mulkey also worked closely with the City on all aspects of public involvement, public relations and external communication, conducting more than 50 meetings with downtown businesses, stakeholders, community leaders, arts organizations, event planners, city staff and the City Council. This extensive inclusion effort resulted in strong public support that was critical for the project's final design.
Visualization played a major role in fostering public support for the project. Computer animations, still renderings and virtual reality cubes were just some of the many tools used to provide stakeholders a realistic three-dimensional experience of the proposed design.
