General Hugh Shelton To Serve as Advisor for Mulkey Engineers & Consultants Board of Directors

Raleigh, NC—Mar. 14, 2011— Mulkey Engineers & Consultants announces General Hugh Shelton, former Joint Chiefs of Staff under both the Clinton and Bush administrations, has joined Mulkey as an Advisor to its Board of Directors. “I am thrilled the General has agreed to advise Mulkey’s Board of Directors. He epitomizes leadership success, high ethics, and a global knowledge that serves the board well as they plot the strategic direction and future markets for Mulkey,” stated Barbara Mulkey, founder and Chairman of the Board.
Edgecomb County native Shelton established the Shelton Leadership Initiative, which is administered through NC State University, in 2002 to teach the leadership skills that led to his own success to students, faculty, executives and community leaders. As Executive Director, this NC State University alum is committed to developing values-based leadership skills that enhance corporate, government, education, non-profit and youth development organizations.
The relationship between General Shelton and Mulkey began nearly eight years ago when the Mulkey/Shelton Leadership Award was created as part of the Shelton Leadership Initiative. To support the effort to provide leadership and ethical training as well as other educational opportunities for young people, the firm made a five year, $25,000 commitment to support the annual General H. Hugh Shelton National Leadership Forum held each November.
Additionally, Barbara Mulkey and her husband Jim, in partnership with General Shelton, endowed the Mulkey/Shelton Leadership Award that annually recognizes and rewards one engineering student who has demonstrated exceptional ethical leadership and commitment while at the same time achieving academic success.
Four-star Army General Shelton has had an incredible life journey from a rural North Carolina farming community to the highest level of American military and political power at the Pentagon and White House. His 38-year military career
includes two 2-year terms as Joint Chiefs of Staff, and he was serving at the time of 9.11. Last fall he published his memoir Without Hesitation: The Odyssey of an American Warrior, a nearly 600-page book that generated international
publicity. The 107th Congress awarded Shelton a Congressional Gold Medal, the highest US civilian award given to an individual who performs an outstanding deed or act of service to the security, prosperity, and national interest of the
country. Among his many other military awards are four bronze stars and a purple
heart.
