Ga. office was awarded his certified federal surveyor certificate. Wilkins

to receive a new federal certification from the U.S. Bureau of Land Management

The new certification is intended to be a significant addition to the resume and credentials of the private professional land surveyor. “I am honored to be one of the first members of this elite group of professional land surveyors,” said Wilkins.
CFeds will perform a wide range of cadastral services within the state(s) he or she is licensed to practice land surveying. Wilkins is currently licensed in three public land system states. Certain services will be under the direction and control of the appropriate BLM chief cadastral surveyor. Mulkey Names New President
May 24, 2006
RALEIGH – Jill Wells Heath, chief financial officer of Mulkey Engineers & Consultants, has been named president of the company. She succeeds Barbara Mulkey, who remains the firm’s chief executive officer.
“Jill is the right person to lead Mulkey at this time. As we expand across the Southeast, we need a firm and steady hand guiding our day-to-day efforts,” said Mulkey. “As I focus on forging the relationships that will enhance our future, Jill will provide the leadership for our continued success in new and existing markets.”
Heath is a certified public accountant who started her own accounting firm in 1992. Mulkey was an early client, with Heath playing a key role in helping Barbara Mulkey map out a successful business plan for the company. Heath served as the firm’s corporate CPA prior to becoming its chief financial officer in 2001.
“Mulkey is the only company I would have considered joining after a satisfying and successful career owning my CPA firm. It is a strong company made up of many talented and committed people. I am honored to have this opportunity to serve the entire team,” said Heath.
Heath is a native of Goldsboro, N.C., and has lived in Cary, N.C., for 19 years. As a dedicated mother and wife, Heath recognizes the importance of a balanced lifestyle and giving back to her community. Heath serves on the Triangle Commercial Real Estate Women (TCREW) board of directors. She is also an active member of the American Council of Engineering Companies of North Carolina (ACEC.NC) and national ACEC Financial Forum. Additional leadership positions include the Wachovia board of directors for Cary, the Wachovia Business Advisory Board and the Raleigh City Museum board of directors. She has been a member of the North Carolina Association of Certified Public Accountants (NCCPA) and the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) since 1991.
As Jill moves forward as president, Barbara Mulkey will intensify her role as CEO, spending more time on strategic growth issues, on client service, and on building relationships throughout all of the communities served by the company. Mulkey Engineers & Consultants has experienced significant growth over the past 13 years and has opened two new offices in Roswell, Ga., and Jacksonville, Fla. The Georgia office alone has generated more than $3 million in new contracts in less than one year.
“Thirteen years ago when Barbara was sitting around her kitchen table outlining a business plan for Mulkey, I was sitting there with her,” Heath said. “Now I’ve been given an opportunity to not just sit beside her, but stand and lead Mulkey. Barbara paved a very successful road; now it is my responsibility to ensure that we continue to move in the direction of excellence.”
Barbara Mulkey Wins Champion Award
from Triangle CREW
Mulkey honored for her efforts to
promote women within commercial real estate
May 2006
RALEIGH – Barbara Mulkey, the founder and president of Mulkey Engineers & Consultants, recently was honored for her efforts to promote women within commercial real estate.
Mulkey received a Champion Award from Triangle Commercial Real Estate Women (CREW) recognizing her work in the category of “Promotion of Women in Real Estate.”
Started in 1999, Triangle CREW’s Champion Awards are presented each year. Nominations are received from companies and individuals throughout the Triangle’s commercial real estate community. Triangle CREW honored 15 recipients during its eighth annual awards ceremony April 27. This year, more than 100 nominations were submitted for awards.
Triangle CREW cited Mulkey’s work promoting the training and hiring of women in the engineering industry. The organization praised her efforts to provide internships to college-aged women pursuing engineering studies as well as mentoring middle-school girls interested in math and science.
“I am truly honored and humbled by this award,” Mulkey said. “The engineering industry has made tremendous strides in terms of advancing the careers of smart and capable women, and I am pleased to do my part to help.”
In 1993, Mulkey launched then-Barbara H. Mulkey Engineering at the kitchen table of her Raleigh home. Her vision for a successful company included state-of-the-art technical resources and a flexible, creative working environment for employees.
“I never would have imagined how both would play in the development of a 200-employee Southeastern engineering firm that has averaged 34-percent growth annually since the beginning,” she said. “I take pride knowing Mulkey broke many long-standing molds at its start and continues to do so today.”

> For Mulkey Engineers & Consultants, its mission is to be the most-trusted engineering firm for its employees, clients, and business partners.
In the built industry, a handful of words always surface as firms seek to define their unique mission in a short, concise manner. We’ve all used them—“quality,” “excellence,” “dependability,” “partner,” “value,” “state-of-the-art,” “family friendly,” and a few others. Mulkey Engineers & Consultants was no different—that is, until recently, when we took a newly learned process of determining how to increase profits and applied it to our process of defining ourselves.
Let me explain. From its 1993 beginning to today, Mulkey has enjoyed exceptional growth, averaging more than 34% annually and expanding from its humble start at my kitchen table to seven offices located throughout the Southeast. At the same time, Mulkey expanded its service lines, adding full land development, construction, geomatics, forensic, and environmental services to its base of transportation design expertise.
As growth brought new challenges to maintaining efficiency and effectiveness—measured primarily in profits—Mulkey’s leaders spent a large percentage of time managing revenues and expenses, and a much smaller percentage of time recruiting and retaining great employees. Yet great employees are at the root of success for all great companies in our service industry. High revenues and reasonable expenses naturally result over time from strong technical staff, smart managers, and visionary leaders.
As we explored the question, “How does Mulkey want to be defined by employees, clients, and business partners at every level?” we came to the conclusion that it is “trust.” Of course, we want to be considered dependable and known for delivering high quality. Naturally, we want to be viewed as a partner delivering value to clients and providing excellence in the workplace. But just as high revenues and reasonable expenses are a byproduct of the right people in the right jobs, shouldn’t excellence and quality be derivatives of something more basic? What is that fundamental characteristic that allows other traits, such as quality and dependability, to flourish? At the end of the day, everything boils down to trust.
At Mulkey, we decided our mission was to become the most-trusted engineering firm. We then envisioned what the most-trusted engineering firm would look like, describing our vision by these real-life examples:
* Mulkey delivers a cost proposal to a client who finds the price to be higher than expected. The client asks if this is a fair price for the services to be provided, and if spending more than anticipated will result in an overall better value for the total project. When Mulkey says “yes,” the client unhesitatingly signs the agreement, knowing without question that it is in his or her best interest.
* During the process of completing the project, the Mulkey project manager discovers some information that will negate completing one of the tasks in the proposal. The client is called with the good news immediately, and that amount is deducted from the contract amount.
* As the project completion date nears, it appears that significant overtime is required to finish on time. Yet, the project manager is dealing with a personal issue at home and needs to limit overtime hours. The PM’s supervisor balances the company’s needs with the employee’s needs, and together they develop a solution that costs the company a little extra money but permits the schedule to be met and the employee to be home as needed. When a tight deadline occurs again a few weeks later, the PM gladly puts in the necessary time, wanting to be generous with a company that was generous with her.
* Meanwhile, a company leader is called by a local civic organization and asked to lead an important, high-profile task force that will give some good exposure to the company while being of value to the community. The company leader carefully weighs his or her time commitments with what will be required to complete the task well before accepting the coveted position title.
You probably get the picture by now: People, all people, want to know that “what you see is what you get,” that there is no curtain to peer behind or carefully hidden contract clauses. The business environment has become complex, in part, because we’ve all come to doubt sincerity, question motives, and get everything in writing. This lends itself to stress of a magnitude never before seen in American business. By instilling trust in its employees, its clients, its business partners, and its community, Mulkey believes everyone involved will experience greater success in work tasks, not to mention more innovative thinking.
“Trust” is a short, simple word, yet in today’s world it is difficult to earn because so many people have abused it. Perhaps that’s why so many of us within the industry try to define ourselves by offshoot words, rather than telling it like it is. I believe the rewards of aspiring to this high goal—most-trusted engineering firm—are worth whatever failures we as flawed human beings are sure to experience. Hopefully, Mulkey will continue to make daily decisions that, over time, create a distinct pattern worthy of its designation.
Barbara Mulkey is president and CEO of Mulkey Engineers & Consultants (Raleigh, NC), which was ranked 25th on The Zweig Letter Hot Firm 2005 List of the 100 fastest-growing firms. She can be reached at bmulkey@mulkeyinc.com.

Mulkey Named One of Nation's Top Employers
Company cited as a "Best Firm to Work For" overall and among medium-sized civil engineering firms by CE News
September 26, 2005
Raleigh, NC — Mulkey Engineers & Consultants ranks among the best employers of civil engineering firms nationwide, according to CE News, a leading trade magazine.
Mulkey was ranked 9th in the country among civil engineering firms with 100 to 499 employees. Among civil engineering firms of all sizes, Mulkey ranked 17th.
The rankings from the fifth annual CE News' "Best Civil Engineering Firms To Work For" will appear in the October 9 issue of the magazine, which is produced by ZweigWhite, one of the nation's most respected engineering consulting companies.
"I can't think of a better compliment, especially considering other firms named represent some of the oldest and most prestigious in the industry," said Barbara Mulkey, founder and president. "Employees are Mulkey's greatest asset, and we truly value them and the excellent work they do for our clients. I am delighted and honored that we won this award."
Since it was founded, the company has offered employees flexible work schedules, competitive compensation packages and a variety of traditional and non-traditional benefits. Mulkey credits the company's culture of promoting a healthy work-family balance for the CE News "best firm" award.
"Our company recognizes that family, friends and community involvement are just as important to our employees — if not more — than their work," she said.
The awards were presented September 15 at the second annual "Best Firm to Work For Summit" sponsored by CE News and Structural Engineer. Carla E. Starr, human resources manager, accepted the awards on behalf of Mulkey.
Mulkey on the Move in Florida
North Carolina-based Mulkey to continue southeastern expansion with office in Jacksonville, Florida
September 13, 2005
RALEIGH – Mulkey Engineers & Consultants is taking a major step towards becoming a regional player by opening its next office in Jacksonville, Florida within the next few weeks. This will bring the total number of offices to seven, located throughout the Carolinas, Georgia and now Florida.
"We've long known that Florida was in our future," said Barbara Mulkey, founder and president of Mulkey. "The market is robust. Our people are ready. And the time is right for us to make this move. Florida is going to play a big role in our company's success."
Lisa Robert, chief operating officer of Mulkey, will relocate to the Jacksonville area and head the company's operations throughout Florida. The firm is already involved in a number of project proposals in the market and expects to have full operations and staff in place by early 2006.
Since its founding in 1993, Mulkey has not only grown geographically; the firm has greatly expanded the range of services it offers as well. With roots in transportation design and engineering, the company now offers a broad spectrum of services, from land development and environmental services to utility design and forensic engineering.
The Florida announcement comes on the heels of a number of significant events for the company, among them:
• Earlier this year, Mulkey opened an office in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. The office, and its senior environmental engineering staff greatly enhance the firm's natural resources and environmental services.
• Mulkey's Roswell, Georgia office, opened in 2004, has recently been awarded approximately $3 million in contracts.
• The firm's expanded Columbia, South Carolina office has seen its market share of work increase over the past year.
Mulkey Helps Reconstruct Legendary "Iron Mike" Statue
He stood guard near the center of Fort Bragg since the early 1960s. But like the many generations of soldier heroes he represented, time was taking its toll.
"Iron Mike," the iconic statue located in the middle of a roundabout in the center of Fort Bragg, was deteriorating. Originally constructed of chicken wire and fiberglass, time and the elements were a powerful enemy. It was with a sense of duty and respect that the leaders of Fort Bragg ordered an exact replica of "Iron Mike" be made in bronze, and installed at the same spot on base.
There were a few stipulations. The original 27-foot high "Iron Mike" was not to be disturbed. He had to remain visible at all times. The crumbling figure could not be covered in scaffolding or plaster molds. The sculptors of the new "Iron Mike" would have to find a new way to create a mold for the bronze version.
Enter Mulkey Engineers & Consultants and its state-of-the-art 3-D Laser Scanning Technology. Mulkey was the first engineering company in North Carolina to adopt this pioneering technology. And while often used to map buildings, highways, bridges and other historic structures, Mulkey used its Cyrax 3-D system to scan "Iron Mike" without physically touching the statue. The result? A sophisticated laser map of the statue's dimensions. This information was then sent to a specialized company that used the data to produce a mold for an exact replica of "Iron Mike."
A newer, stronger "Iron Mike" was hoisted into his honorable post on September 23, 2005. He will stand as a tribute to generations of soldiers for years to come.
Mulkey, Inc. Named to ENR Top 500 List
for Second Consecutive Year
Firm Jumps 37 Notches on Annual National List
April 2005
Raleigh, NC – Mulkey Engineers and Consultants, Inc. was again named one of the top 500 engineering consulting firms by Engineering News-Record (ENR), an industry trade journal, in its April 18th issue.
The firm bettered its 2004 ranking, moving to 430 from 467 on the prestigious list.
Companies are ranked according to revenue for design serves performed in 2004. Mulkey reported revenue growth of 19% from 2003 to 2004. During that time, Mulkey also increased its staff by 10%.
This is just the latest of recognitions Mulkey has received for its growth and profitability. Most recently, the firm was named to the Triangle Business Journal’s Fast 50, coming in at number seven on a list of the Triangle’s fastest growing companies.
“The ENR 500 is the benchmark for growth in the engineering industry. It’s exciting to see ourselves move up on this well-respected list” said Barbara Mulkey, company president.
Mulkey Played Early Role in Award-Winning Greenway Bridge Project:
Reedy Creek Greenway and Pedestrian Bridge receives national recognition
Raleigh, NC – It was simply a creative idea five years ago. A greenway trail connecting Meredith College with the North Carolina Museum of Art, to include a 660-foot pedestrian bridge above the whirring I-440 Beltline.
Today, thanks to initial work by Mulkey Engineers and Consultants, that idea is an award-winning reality. The Reedy Creek Greenway System, which includes the striking bridge, has received the 2005 Environmental Excellence Award from the Federal Highway Administration.
In 2000, Mulkey began conducting a feasibility study for the project under an agreement with the North Carolina Department of Transportation Division of Bicycle and Pedestrian Transportation. This multi-disciplinary study addressed many concerns, including the location of the greenway, security, environmental impacts and aesthetics.
The bridge crossing received special attention during the study, due to its location above one of Raleigh’s major freeways, as well as its size and proximity to the Museum. Aesthetic considerations were a priority. Mulkey studied several options including special pier design, cable-stayed and truss bridge designs. Mulkey also coordinated with bridge suppliers for coating options, feasibility and cost estimates.
This isn’t the first time Mulkey laid the groundwork for such a project. In 2000, Mulkey completed a study to identify needed improvements to existing roadways to accommodate bicycle commuting to the Research Triangle Park. This study assessed traffic volumes, drainage structure conflicts, structure needs, connectivity and costs. Typical sections and detailed cost estimates were developed for each suitable corridor.

Mulkey, Inc. Named to Triangle Fast 50
November 2004
Raleigh, NC—Mulkey Engineers & Consultants, Inc. was named number seven on the Triangle Business Journal’s list of the 50 fastest growing private companies in the triangle.
“Up from number eight in 2003, this award is an honor for Mulkey Engineers & Consultants,” says Vice President and Chief Operations Officer, Lisa M. Robert. Mulkey sustained growth from 2001-2003, where many firms were struggling with the economic downturn. We can attribute that growth to the diligence of our employees and the tremendous trust our clients placed in us at that time.
The firm restructured its leadership team at the beginning of 2004 – a move that allows a core group to share top-level leadership responsibilities. And, the firm has enjoyed the addition of a Roswell, Georgia office, which opened in mid-October. The recent events are positioning Mulkey for continued growth and bringing the firm closer to its goal of becoming the Southeast’s most trusted engineering firm.
Awards Bestowed on Recent Mulkey Projects
Raleigh, NC—Two recent Mulkey projects have been recognized by industry awards competitions for excellence in their categories.
Heritage Wake Forest Golf Community was named "Best Project in a Suburban Environment" by the Triangle Business Journal's in their first annual Edge Awards.
Mulkey developed the initial master plan and then became the primary site/civil engineering firm on the project – the second largest residential development in Wake County. Since its implementation, Mulkey has provided on-going site development services including surveying, grading, drainage, erosion control, utilities and construction stakeout. The firm also provided drain and erosion control design for the 18-hole golf course. The Heritage is an Ammons Development Group project.
The Edge Awards are held exclusively for the architectural, engineering and construction industries and recognizes winners in seven different categories, including “Best Project in an Urban Environment,” “Project that Most Contributes to an Improved Quality of Life in the Triangle,” and Best Design Build.
Mulkey received an Honorable Mention from the American Council of Engineering Companies of North Carolina’s (ACEC/NC) “Engineering Excellence Award” competition for their 3D laser scan of Two Progress Plaza.
Mulkey is one of two firms in the nation to have a 3D Cyrax Laser Scanner for high-definition surveys. With this technology, Mulkey scanned Two Progress Plaza in downtown Raleigh, making it the area's first high-rise building with a high-definition scan on file. The scan validated the structure's coordinates for real estate closing, as well as serving as an as-built survey to detail any encroachments for public record. Mulkey's scan also provided a complete external picture of the Progress Energy Building—an image and measurements that can be used long-term as a reference for any construction questions regarding the structure's initial state.
The ACEC/NC’s “Engineering Excellence Award” competition is open to the engineering community and companies competing in nine categories: studies, research and consulting engineering services, building/technology systems, structural systems, surveying and mapping technology, environmental, water and wastewater, water resources, transportation, and special projects. Mulkey competed in the category of surveying and mapping technology.
