EDUCATION
Education is a cornerstone of Mulkey's community initiative. Each year, during National Engineers' Week, Mulkey employees visit middle schools and talk to young teens about the role engineers play in the world around them.

Literacy Council of Wake County
and MeredithREADS Literacy Program

Mulkey staffer Jennifer Hare has a special commitment to literacy. She serves on the Board of Directors for the Literacy Council of Wake County. The Council’s mission is to teach adults how to read and write through the use of volunteer, one-on-one tutors. She also volunteers with the MeredithREADS Literacy Program, which provides young students with a positive early experience with books. She works individually with one student throughout the school year, visiting him once a week at his elementary school.

8th Grader chooses Mulkey for “Job Shadow Day”

8th grader Megan Carroll is already talking about opening her own engineering firm some day. She gained plenty of insight when she spent a day “shadowing” four Mulkey engineers as they went about their daily work. Megan observed many different aspects of engineering: forensic, transportation, visualization and construction services. Christy Wright, PE, a project manager for Mulkey’s construction services group, took Megan onsite to the US 64 Knightdale Project. Megan attends Lufkin Road Middle School in Apex. And she comes by her engineering interest honestly: both her grandfathers are engineers.

Intern gains real-world experience at Mulkey

Senior NCSU Civil Engineering major Catrina Walters looks forward to designing her first buildings and bridges. But for now, she’s learning about the hard work and technical detail that goes into writing proposals, planning documents and other communications materials. As an intern at Mulkey, Catrina is working with the marketing and transportation planning groups to assist with technical writing of various documents. Catrina became interested in securing the internship after learning how important technical writing skills were to an engineering professional.
